Elo Progo Art House: A Hidden Riverside Cafe Blending Art and Nature in Borobudur

The sound of flowing water, at times resembling waves crashing on a shore, creates a soothing natural symphony. Add to that the breeze rustling through the trees, and the whole experience becomes a serene immersion into nature. Sipping on their signature warm kolang kaling drink completes the calming atmosphere.

The owner of Elloprogo Art House, Sony Santosa, is a visual artist. Together with his wife and child, Sony brings his love for nature to life, not only through painting but also by shaping the space itself. The café features ethnic, antique-inspired architecture, cobblestone paths, rustic wooden tables, and a layout that flows with the natural terrain and surrounding trees.

“We’re not just painting on canvas, we’re designing this space to blend with and preserve the natural beauty of this place,” he explained.

Originally from Bengkulu, Sony grew up in Jakarta, spent time living in Paris and Bali, and after considering other locations like Solo and Yogyakarta, he eventually chose to settle in Magelang, a tranquil, quiet riverside sanctuary.

“The Elo Progo rivers are formed from the merging of springs that originate from four mountains: Merapi, Merbabu, Sumbing, and Sindoro. Locals believe this confluence holds positive energy and is a source of life. That’s why I feel so connected and at peace here,” Sony shared.

Eloprogo Art House also offers scenic photo spots and a performance space for music, traditional arts, and theater. Although the place hasn’t reached its full potential yet, Sony is optimistic.

He feels fortunate with the rise of social media platforms like Instagram, which have organically helped spread the word about Elloprogo Art House, bringing in more visitors who come not just for the café offerings but also for the stunning views.

“On a clear day, you can see Mount Sumbing, the river, the forest canopy, and hear the harmony of natural sounds all around,” he added.

At Eloprogo Cafe, visitors can enjoy local snacks like mendoan, cireng, french fries, fried bananas, instant noodles, fried chicken rice, and beverages such as kolang kaling drinks and young coconut.

Elloprogo Art House is conveniently located near Social Ducks Hostel, making it an easy and worthwhile stop for travelers looking to unwind, enjoy a drink, and soak in the peaceful riverside atmosphere. With its blend of natural charm and artistic character, the cafe adds a refreshing layer to Magelang’s growing list of must-visit spots, alongside iconic destinations like Borobudur Temple, Punthuk Setumbu, Sukomakmur, and other nearby natural attractions.
